1. Easter Island
Officially a territory of Chile, Easter Island lies thousands of miles off the coast roughly halfway to Tahiti. It is famous for its 887 extant monumental statues, called ‘Moai,’ created by the early Rapanui people centuries ago.
2. Los Pinguinos Natural Monument
The largest penguin colonies in southern Chile, Los Pinguinos is home to more than 120,000 Magellanic penguins. In September or October each year, the birds migrate here and find their mate.
3. San Rafael Glacier
The San Rafael Glacier is a giant glacier that calves into the Laguna San Rafael. The journey by boat is a spectacle in itself, passing through the narrow channels of the isolated Aisén region.
4. Valle de la Luna
The “Valley of the Moon” is located in the Atacama Desert. This breathtaking desert landscape is the result of centuries of winds and floods on the sand and stone of the region.
5. Marble Cathedral of General Carrera Lake
A visit to Chile is not complete without a trip to the mind-blowing Blue Marble Caves and Marble Cathedral of General Carrera Lake. Formed by over 6,000 years of erosion, these unique geological formations are sure to leave the lucky spectators speechless.
6. Torres del Paine
Torres del Paine is a national park in the extreme south region of Patagonian Chile. It features mountains, lakes, glaciers and three spectacular granite peaks shaped by the forces of glacial ice.
7. Villarrica Volcano
Villarrica is one of Chile’s most active volcanoes, rising above the lake and town of the same name. To top it off, the volcano has one of the world’s only lava lakes in its crater.
